In the church year, there are a number of seasons which we observe. I don’t know about you but there are only a couple of seasons that really have penetrated my consciousness and which I think very much about.
We are in one of those seasons now, Epiphany. We will be in Epiphany for the next few weeks until we arrive at Ash Wednesday. So here are a couple of thoughts about the Epiphany Season.
Epiphany is one of our oldest seasons with records of Epiphany celebrations going back to the second century. Interestingly enough Epiphany is older than Christmas as a celebration. Christmas is really a later reaction to the pagan holidays that are celebrated around the winter solstice.
Epiphany is all about the invisible becoming visible, the divine breaking into the reality of human beings. It asks us to look at the world and reality from a different perspective in order to see what we previously could not. It is the Logos coming into the world and recognizing its presence in the tent of human flesh that is Jesus of Nazareth. It is about the Holy Spirit coming into the world and recognizing her presence. It’s about being aware that we all do not think alike and the fact that we have much to learn by entertaining different perspectives and seeing through different eyes.
