A few years ago, ok more than a few, I was a pretty good bowler. One of the sayings at the time was this. “Trust is a must or your game is a bust”. What was meant was to roll the ball with a natural arm swing and trust that it would do the work. What was to be avoided was trying to guide it, as this destroyed the “action” of the ball.
One of the interesting parts of this week’s gospel is a trust issue. An expensive perfume was placed on Jesus and the carrier of the group money purse, Judas, objected. The reason he objected was that the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. But the author tells us that the real reason he objected was that Judas wanted to sell the perfume and steal the money.
I have always found this interesting. You see Jesus was obviously extremely bright and aware. I am quite certain he knew Judas was a thief, but chose to let him handle the money anyway. Why would he do something so obviously shortsighted, we ask?
I think there’s a good reason. Let’s talk about it on Sunday.
