In this week’s gospel lesson, three people are given incredible wealth to manage while their master is gone. Two invest and earn their master interest. The third hides what he has been given and it remains exactly as it was when the master returns. God, of course, is represented by the master and we are the folks given so very much to manage.
God is pleased with what the first two did and very displeased with what the third did not do. On top of that the third even had this to say to his master. “Master, I knew you were a harsh man reaping what you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground.”
Well, it turns out the third had an understanding of God that the first two did not. Aren’t we much the same? Perhaps each of us might be well to ask this question. What is the God like that we believe in? Is our God the one that bets heavily on us or is our God the image of our own fears?
More Sunday.
