The gospel this week is quite well known. There are weeds among the growing wheat. Jesus is asked what to do about them. Should they be pulled out? His answer is to let them grow together, and when it comes time to harvest the wheat, the weeds will be separated and only the wheat will be kept.
Now I am quite sure this gospel has been used to scare multitudes of folks into thinking they are headed someplace bad when they move into eternity. I have a different idea.
How about reminding ourselves that we each contain both wheat and weeds within ourselves. Nobody is entirely good or entirely bad. Perhaps the good news is that God will see that the weeds within each of us are left behind as we make our exit? Only the wheat will be left. This seems right to me and mirrors the compassion that Jesus constantly displays in scripture.
Something to think about. More this coming Sunday.
